Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
This professor's lectures lack content and relativity, he is a jolly fellow, but if it weren't for his quizzes and a cute boy that is in that class as well I would not ever go. Instead I would read the text and work on my notecards that he lets us use on the test. The tests are not as clear and concise as he portrays them to be, yet they are wordy and most of the questions can be described as "trick questions." I will not lie, I like his character, but I think he needs to be more specific as to what we need to concretely understand for the tests/quizzes.
Prof. Appleton has obviously rigged the rating system (see blatant British references to dental hygiene and slang below), but the avid reader will see test questions are not written for a 102 level course. As an example, see the question about centrifugal party system. On p. 255 of the text, it says nothing about the extreme right and left agreeing or disagreeing, but on the test, part of the correct answer is that the right and left have trouble agreeing (it was one of "both a and b" answers). This involves greater analysis than presented in the book or lectures, is representative of the obscurity commonly tested, and is wrong for this course level. Nonetheless, he is still a good professor. The test questions just need to be written to a 102 level. I've long suspected the TA is actually writing the test questions, as it it common for grad student TAs with something to prove to write to their own level.
Professor Appleton is a superb professor as you can see by the above descriptions. Disregard the bloody slackers who complain simply because it is a class where using one's brain is not optional. Another noteworthy accomplishment of Professor Appleton is his English dissent but puzzling enough he has maintained spectacular dental hygiene.

Negative:
He's actually a very good, though not easy, professor. Primary criticism is test questions tend to require more analysis than reasonable for 100 level. He could use time more efficiently, but lectures are well organized. I would recommend highly, with these qualifications.

Is challenging
Is creative
Brings discussion into the classroom

Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Comes to class organized
Negative:
Expectations are unclear or lofty
Overly difficult tests or assignments
This is a 100 level class that is required, and he acts like it is a 300 level class. He gives quizzes on chapters that we have not covered yet. He doesn't care about how the students do in his class, he made this quite clear one day while going off on a tangent. The only thing that I have taken away from the class so far is how many people you need in a room to have two people with the same birthday.
