I think most of the negative comments come from students who don't come to class or try to do the work. Diane makes everything you need readily available and she is ready to do anything to help students. Talk to her and you'll see that she is super-nice and approachable. She helped me debug programs I had trouble with and made helpful suggestions for doing better work. She has also given me the best advice about succeeding in CS in general--much better than my advisor!

Diane Law is without question one of the worst instructors I have had the misfortune of studying under. While I did receive an A in the class, I was extremely upset with the quality of instruction. Teaching from her own book (which was filled with spelling, grammar, and factual errors) and quoting from it verbatim made for extremely useless study. The biggest problem that I have is her use of modified C, and generally going against coding standards. For example, the use of pointers is masked from the student in many cases, and file i/o can only be performed using her proprietary libraries.

She teaches in class what you have to teach yourself the week before for the labs. Tests are insane (ie trick multi choice q's). She also decided to teach her own version of C which does evil things with strings and makes students assume that it is standard C. made it out with a B- , but I had some previous C experience (supposed to be intro to programming...)

If you're willing to do the work, you'll learn an amazing amount. Taking a class from her will make you work hard, but you'll be glad later.
