Andrew Phillips
University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire
Department:
Computer Science
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
It's pretty clear that anyone whose biggest gripe about Phillips is that he's short probably failed the class, and most likely deserved to. After all, when making up a word like "leprechaunesque", they otherwise might have been able to figure out how to spell it. ;-) Phillips isn't the shortest guy in the department, but more relevantly, his stature has never in any way impeded his ability to teach. It is unfortunate that he's been coöpted by the Administration, because the CS department really needs him back as a full-time professor, that's how good he is (and a commentary on the people they're bringing in from MIS to replace him...) The only valid criticism I've read here is that it does take him an incredibly long time to get assignments back, something he demonstrated he CAN do if he really wants to, in record time, since he managed to grade the last assignment while we were taking the final... He's no Wick, but he's still a valuable asset to the CS department.
He has his good points and bad points. He's really nice but sometimes I feel like he doesn't really care about the students. His assignments are really difficult, especially when some of the stuff isn't talked about in class. I didn't realize I was practically failing the class until after midterm because it takes forever to get assignments back. He's hard to reach outside of office hours too. Nice thing is that you get to use notes on quizzes/tests.
Positive:
Is challenging
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Involves students in every lecture
Comes to class organized
Negative:
Overly difficult tests or assignments
Its best to keep up on the work, or you will end up being left behind, with out knowing. He takes forever to grade homework, and if you unknowingly are doing bad your right screwed. Biggest complaint is through out the class you cant really get a feel for how you are doing, as it can change drastically at any point, unknowingly.
Positive:
Motivates students to do well
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter

Shows a love of teaching
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Involves students in every lecture

Negative:
Does not make class challenging enough
Unless you have to, don't take him. From lack of instructions to being obscenely short, leprachaunesk even. He grades too hard and isn't very helpful when asked questions in computer science labs.
