Dr. Tan is one of those professors who comes to class, teaches, enjoys it, and if you get caught up in his enthusiasm, you can't help but do well. He's not always the most helpful when you go to his office, sometimes responding "that's in the notes", even if it's not. This teaches you, as a 185 student, to go learn how to figure things out for yourself sometimes. If you don't learn this in 185, chances are, you'll go far--as in far away from the CS dept., after you fail every other class in the department. Dr. Tan is a genius when it comes to catching cheaters, so if you're going to cheat, don't take him. If you get caught cheating, don't take him two semesters in a row and get caught cheating both semesters. (This apparently has happened...) He's a nice guy, and returns as much respect as he's given. So, sing it with me, R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Sometimes he gets carried away on a tangent, so if it's important to you that a professor stick exclusively to you imagine to be "the script", take a class in kind, gentle, effective and respectful persuasion before you take him as a professor. Oh, and in case anyone asks you, he LOVES the French. :-)

Professor Tan is an amazing computer science professor. He knows quite a bit about his subject, but he is able to make it simple and fairly easy to understand. I do not believe that there is any computer science class that won't make you want to take a nap. Therefore while his lectures are boring, they are very informative. Tan acts like he doesn't care whether you try or not. That is his game. If you don't try and don't come to class, you WILL fail (unless you already know the language). I would definately recommend this professor.
