Alison Townsend
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
Department:
English/Literature
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
Alison is the best professor that I have ever had. She truly cares about each and every one of her students, even those of you who call her names. She does not judge students the way they judge her. She is inspirational, motivating, and courageous. I can only hope that one day I come close to being the kind of teacher and person that she is. If you're serious about writing... if you're serious about life, take her class. She will move you to take risks, think for yourself, find your voice, and make the world a better place. She rocks.
It may take a little while to take this hippie seriously but she really is a good teacher and very understanding. Every class you come to you have to bring a one page response to a reading, but she is really flexible. I went through my folder one day and realized I hadn't turned 3 papers in! I told her this and she still took them, a month late, and gave me full points! The class is all discussion and you can participate as much or as little as you want and she won't make you feel stupid no matter what you say.
Positive:
I would recommend this professor
Is interesting/entertaining/funny
Is challenging
Brings discussion into the classroom
Motivates students to do well
Shows a love of teaching
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Involves students in every lecture
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Negative:
Professor does not relate to students
She went to woodstock in the 60's, nuff said. Total hippie. If you say something to someone sitting near you in class, she's the type of professor who will be all like "What's that?" and try and get you to tell the rest of the class even though it's completely irrelevant to the discussion. Not a bad professor, but not a great one either.
Allsion isn't a bad teacher, although if you have different views from hers class can get very frusterating at times!! The class consists of 3 papers...a research, poetry and drama paper! She assigns the research paper as your first assignment which seemed really dumb to me at first, but you realize she's doing it for you! When most of the other classes are writing their reserach paper at the end of the semester along with studying for exams your paper is already done with and out of the way! She also claims that she doesn't give out many "A's" which I didn't see to be true! I'm not a very strong writer at all and I pulled off a "A-" in the class without trying very hard! Allison is a good teacher, but if you don't have very liberal views be prepared to get frusterated at times!
Positive:
Is creative
Brings discussion into the classroom
Motivates students to do well
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a love of teaching
Involves students in every lecture
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Comes to class organized
Negative:
Expectations are unclear or lofty
Alison seems to have a good heart, but I simply didn't like her teaching approach. Sitting in a circle and being forced into writing about stupid things and sharing it with the class just seems kind of childish to me. It's easy enough to get by in the class (no one failed) but it's overly difficult to get an A. I'm pretty sure about 18 out of 20 people got a B in the class. Even really good papers usually get a B in her class, so unless you're a super student don't expect an A, and unless you're a terrible student don't expect a C,D, or F. If you just want to get by this class and LOVE first-person writing, drama, and poetry - take this class.
