Philosophy
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
TERRIBLE professor. She gave me a zero on my final paper and when I confronted her about it, she falsely accused me a plagiarism. The grade appeal took the entire following semester, and the Provost finally had to force the grade change. Completely ruined my last semester of college. Save yourself and stay away. FAR away.
First of all the is a gen-ed class (World of Ideas) we are in this class because he have to take it not because we want to be. You do not need to grade the papers as hard as you do. The class itself is easy- 3 papers make up 90% of your grade and 10% for participation and such. I had solid B's on all my papers and still managed to pull an A in the class because I participated. If you want an A- raise your hand and speak- even if you don't know what you are talking about- she doesn't care. Sometimes she sits in the front of the classroom waiting for someone to raise their hand and speak about the assigned reading that no one read. She then gives a brief background about the reading before she starts the discussion. Listen here. Then when she asks "what did you think?" This is where you raise your hand and talk... Participate and she will reward you later with a good grade.
Positive:
Good professor.
I would recommend this professor
Brings discussion into the classroom
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a love of teaching
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Involves students in every lecture
Negative:
Expectations are unclear or lofty
This class was incredibly boring, but that's probably because I don't like Philosophy. While Dr. Lebens is an intelligent individual, her lectures are boring and hardly anyone ever particpated in class. Also, she doesn't seem to have fun as she teaches, which is a turn-off for me. Her exams are all essays (there are four total) which can be difficult. The readings were difficult and sometimes after class I didn't understand them any more than I did before class. Dr. Lebens is okay--not the best, but not the worst.
Positive:
Is challenging
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Comes to class organized
Negative:
Professor is boring or bland
Needs to involve students in class discussions
Lacks enthusiasm in the classroom
I didn't like Lebens...I thought she graded pretty tough on the papers you have to write. Also, the questions for the papers are difficult. She couldn't get our class to participate very much, which made it even more boring. If you don't like philosophy, you probably won't like Lebens.
Positive:
Is challenging
Motivates students to do well
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Involves students in every lecture
Negative:
Professor is boring or bland
Overly difficult tests or assignments
Needs to involve students in class discussions
Lacks enthusiasm in the classroom
Professor does not relate to students
She's alright. One thing I would say is don't try and have a philosophical conversation. If you stick to what the text says --you will do well. If you try to argue or anything, you are pretty much just wasting your own time. She's really good as far as introducing you to a variety of writers. She also was good at explaining them. She is really nice and willing to help which is certainly a plus! I would take her again, but she wouldn't be my first choice.
