Dan Kim

"Graphic Design is NOT a fine art" Then why the hell can this university give out Bachelor of FINE ART Degrees???!!! English is his second language which makes for very hearty conversations that will make you leave the classroom confused and upset/angry. He doesn't teach, he preaches. I could do a better job in teaching the class than he could, AND I'M A FINE ARTS MAJOR! He doesn't critique he only criticizes based on his own personal opinion.

I find it funny when professors add positive ratings for themselves to try to counter the bad reviews...case and point

Dan Kim is hands down one of the best Graphic Design professors in Whitewater. He is very knowledgeable and is always willing to help his students. Even tho he is a hard ass he very smart and pushes you to succeed. Any bad review is mostly due to the fact that the person did not take his criticism well or thought he was too hard.

Professor Kim believes he is preparing his students for the "real world" by forcing them to figure out everything on their own. The thing he is not taking into consideration is even in the real world we will have art directors guiding us. Given, they won't lay it out step-by-step but we still will not be figuring everything out on our own. Good teamwork in a company setting is about communication and explanation of what needs to be accomplished and how it needs to be accomplished. Dan Kim did not do this. Dan Kim would only criticize and would not provide compliments of any kind because he believes his students are supposed to know everything that is in his mind, whether or not it is written on the rubric. He needs to turn into a teacher and not an Art Director or whatever role he thinks he is playing in the classroom. We are in college to learn! We do not already have the skill set to figure everything out. If we wanted to go into the situation where we weren't learning anything and were expected to figure everything out for ourselves we would be searching for an actual graphic design job instead of taking a class where you are SUPPOSED to be taught graphic design approaches and procedures. Professor Kim really needs to reevaluate his teaching style and outlook on how he is "preparing" his students for the future.

While he knows what he is talking about (and he will remind you of this) his skill knowledge needs to be honed in a much better way than his teaching style. As stated in one of the other reviews, professional practice is to say, "I like this....but you need to change this....". Dan has no sense of this, it is all criticism. The thing is, and this is common sense, in order to make someone want to succeed you have to give them encouragement and not just criticism. Both are needed, and Dan Kim has not figured this out.
