This was the first year Appleton taught Theatre 110, so I'll cut him a little slack. Still, the class was a joke. If you have even the most basic knowledge of theatre coming into the class, then you won't learn much. Most lectures erupted into arguments among students about completely unrelated topics (i.e. who believes in fate when we were supposed to be listing tragic plays). He was a great guy, but not very challenging or informative at all. We watched a lot of movies. There were a few papers assigned (two about the movies we watched, two about plays we attended), but otherwise homework was minimal. Some readings were assigned, but they weren't long and proved somewhat unnecessary. Tests were incredibly simple. They average about 30 questions each (sometimes less), were non-cumulative (including the final), and consisted mostly of multiple choice questions. The biggest part of your final grade is practicum hours (costume shop, scene shop, and lighting), of which you have to do 30 to even pass and 40 to get an A. Overall, not a painful class to take, but do not go in expecting to be challenged.
Positive:
Brings discussion into the classroom
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Negative:
Notes/lecture is confusing
Does not make class challenging enough
Eric Appleton. First off, the class wasn't all that bad. In my opinion, Whitewater's theatre dept. is a joke but if we are talking about the professor here he does a good job. The class is divided into 2 tests, 2 papers on movies, 2 reviews of Whitewater plays, a final and 50 practicum hours. He doesn't give homework but does assign reading and bases a lot of the test questions on that. He does a good job at covering all beginning aspects of theatre and facilitates good discussions most days. It is clear that Eric knows his stuff and is reading his book and enjoys hearing what we have to say. This was his first year teaching and Id say he did an alright job. I guess i am just slightly biased because I wasn't happy with my theatre experience at Whitewater at all. Hes a genuinely nice guy and I would recommend him. Though I believe he is the only one to teach the class.
Positive:
Good professor.
I would recommend this professor
Is interesting/entertaining/funny
Is creative
Brings discussion into the classroom
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Involves students in every lecture
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Comes to class organized
Negative:
Appleton does a GREAT JOB at involving multimedia into his lectures, and with World of the Arts, you HAVE to!! He is more of a theatre person, but being more of a theatre person, he has to know more about dance, music, and visual arts. In this course, (this goes for any professors) you have to go to four events. You have to attend and write a "critique" about what you saw (one: visual art, dance, music, and theatre) Take Appleton if you can!! It will be worth it!!
