Hien Nguyen
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
Department:
Computer Science
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
Professor Nguyen is a very good professor. At first, she may be hard to understand, considering her accent. But if you get used to it, she explains things rather well. She also makes sure to hand out several practical exercises to enhance understanding of the concepts she is teaching. Her knowledge of her subject matter is obviously excellent. Highly recommended if you don't mind having a professor with an accent.
This class is easy with professor Nguyen. I got a C in the class only because I drop-boxed my final project and it got lost and she had not gotten it and I deleted my receipt out of my email(don't do this). With that I would have easily gotten a B. Her grading sometimes seems screwy because she doesn't tell you certain things that she just expects you to know. If you go to class she helps but if you are good with computers you can easily leave when she is done discussing and starts walking around the room to help students.

Most of the classes I've had with her (many) were easy if you paid attention or knew anything about programming ahead of time. She responds to e-mails right away and will help you if you run into a problem with a program. Overall an excellent teacher!

Negative:
Confusing or hard to understand
I had her for both Java classes and first 'learned' Java from her. She left on maturity leave for most of the semester. Prof. Kane taught our class to make up for her absence and basically mocked her power points- her primary means of teaching. This altered my view of 'how much she knows' and 'quality of a teacher.' I will compare Kane and her. Kane is one of the smartest people I have meet- he typed a 50-60 lines of code in Text Pad without making a mistake while teaching us what he was doing. And even better the program worked. On a side note Kane expects you to do the same (be as good as he is) and has far harder assignments than she does. Through one learns more and learns the right way (industry way) from Kane. So my take would be take Kane if you want to write Java/code for the rest of your life. But if you are like me... like DB far better than this Java shit take her because her class is easier even if you don't learn Java the 'right way.'
