Jian Guo
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
Department:
English/Literature
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
Professor Guo is enthusiastic about what he teaches and always involves the class in discussion. He does take attendance, but if you show up, pay attention and read the material, you should do fine. His midterm and final for WOI are probably the most difficult tests, but the paper you write is from personal opinion; not research. I didn't like him for English in freshman year, but I did like having him for World of Ideas. And his accent isn't that hard to understand.
Don't view him as a bad professor because of the class itself. WOI definitely not my type of class but Professor Guo is a great guy. The class itself is boring but he tries to get the class into in and generate discussion. The quizes he gives are rather easy and he doesn't really expect you to dig supper deep into the readings to know the answers. The course load is good not to much work but you are required to do readings once a week but they are rather short compared to other classes. He curves the mid term which is nice. One big term paper at the end is the only hard work. He offers extra credit a few times which is easy and helps the grade a ton. He is a real nice guy that just teaches a subject that doesn't interest me. Would recommend this guy for sure though because he helps you do good with study material and good lectures
Positive:
Great teaching methods/approach
I would recommend this professor
Is challenging
Brings discussion into the classroom
Motivates students to do well
Shows a love of teaching
Involves students in every lecture
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Comes to class organized
Negative:
Professor is boring or bland
Confusing or hard to understand
If you are someone who's mind has a tendancy to wander, don't take his class. His accent makes it VERY hard to pay attention. I know he means well and you can tell that he knows what he's talking about, but it is just too hard to focus when you can't understand what he is saying.
Positive:
Shows a love of teaching
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Negative:
Would not recommend this professor
Professor is boring or bland
Confusing or hard to understand
Expectations are unclear or lofty
Professor does not relate to students
He is a good professor. When he starts talking you know that he knows what he is talking about but its sorta like he is talking to himself. The quizzes were decent if you read the books. Overall not a bad class but to me very boring
Positive:

Negative:
Professor is boring or bland
Expectations are unclear or lofty
Needs to involve students in class discussions
Professor does not relate to students
He is the nicest guy, and clearly knows his subject, but he needs to rethink the Modern Western Literature course. All the quizzes and most discussions were on content, and he never gave a complete lecture on theory. He knows the material, but he taught the course like reading comprehension. This is a 300-level college lit course, but it felt more like remedial English. It was a waste of time because he didn't share his knowledge.
Positive:
Shows a love of teaching
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Negative:
Notes/lecture is confusing
Does not make class challenging enough
