Jonathon Ivry

Although he has a quirky sense of humor and relates well to students, he is rather vague when it comes to writing assignements. Granted I have received decent grades on my papers, he takes forever to hand them back so you dont know how to improve your NEXT paper because you never received a grade for the PREVIOUS one yet... Also, he assigns a shit-ton of reading... Like 60 pages a class which may not seem like too much (if it were an interesting book) but some of these books are ridiculously boring or hard to understand. Decent teacher though.

Ivry is pretty different from most professors I've had. I see a lot of comments on here from people complaining his paper expectations are vague. It's true, he really doesn't give any specific topic to write about. But if you argue a point and defend it well, he'll give you a good grade. He's pretty fair, he won't judge your opinion, but he absolutely hates it when people ramble on in papers without an arguable point. I'll also second what everybody else is saying on plagiarism. He takes forever to grade because he checks. He busted somebody in our class for copying a few sentences off of the website for the book. All in all, he's great. He's friendly, he's fair, and he'll tangent about the strangest stuff. I got a B.

Professor Ivry was a pretty good teacher. As long as you go to class, and pay attention you will do just fine. He is really funny and brings students into every discussion. Many times, he will let class out al little early. Sometimes I think he plays favorites though. I got a B+ in his class and would recommend him.

I also am not sure what to make of Professor Ivry. He seemed confused most of the time, especially when it came time for him to answer questions about our papers. It was hard to know what to write when he didn't even know what he wanted us to write. He chose good books but I lost all respect for him as a teacher when he came to class and told us to figure out what to do with the book because he didn't prepare for class. I got a B but I had to work pretty hard and wade through a swamp of uncertainty.
