Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
If at all possible, I would recommend avoiding this professor. As a methods class, we should be jumping in and doing actual activities with kids, not listening to her read out of the text book for the entire class period. I feel as though she is very biased when grading papers, and will often cross off perfectly acceptable words and "recommend" using an alternative word of her choosing. Another issue I have with her is that we do the exact. same. thing. every. single. class. period. Haven't they preached to us the importance of differentiated instruction for the past 4 years?! She basically does the opposite of everything we have ever been taught in relation to being a good teacher. It's a scary thought that this is our last course of Language Arts/Reading before gradutaion and I have gained little knowledge from her class. Perhaps the school should offer a tuition refund for having to sit through that. If scheduling conflicts make this processor impossible to avoid, I would highly recommend packing a soduko puzzle in your knapsack.
I agree with the other negatives. I had just finished my Education degree and my last two classes were night classes with Brimmer. These were the worse two classes of my educational career. Not only is she rude, biased, and unwilling to even consider altnerative options to her rigid and outdated teaching style, she grades on your ability to kiss ass while remaining quiet in class and not asking too many questions she can't answer. Grades in the class are purely subjective and half of the class spent our summer getting "perked" from her and fighting our posted grades because they were unjustly given. She even takes off points if you're "tardy". PLEASE, WHATEVER YOU DO, CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE TEACHERS FOR READING 460 AND LANGUAGE 425!!!!!!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE- stay away from this professor. I just finished my degree in teaching and she's the WORST professor I have had in my 4 years of Whitewater. You won't learn anything and if you leave class to go to the bathroom she'll write you up. She needs to be fired. Save yourself the hell and avoid her at ALL Lengths.

I took childrens lit as a summer class and loved it. It was very laid back but I learned a lot about the importance of providing appropriate literature to children. This was an easy class and I enjoyed it. I am now in love with children's books.
Positive:
Good professor.
I would recommend this professor
Is challenging
Motivates students to do well
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a love of teaching
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Comes to class organized
Negative:
I have to say that Brimmer was the worst prof that I have ever had. I didn't learn one important fact in that class about children's lit. She takes off points when you don't come to class, but then she doesn't show up on 3 of the days. She gives you a rubric, and then takes off points for not going above and beyond what she wanted from you. She reads to you as if you are a child. Yes, I may want to work with children, but don't treat me like one. Overall, if I were you, I would avoid her like a hippy would avoid a war. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!!!
