Beginning Physics is not his strong subject to teach. He is brilliant, but can not teach well. His "curve" was to lower the expectations when many people were failing. Get out quickly if you don't understand in the first or second class with him. If you try later, it may be impossible.

To be fair, I just can't stand the guy. He is probably really cool when not your professor, but his classes are terrible. It's not the calculus, it's the concepts. Some get it, some don't and there is no middle ground. He will say you can see him during his "abundant" office hours - but he is either not there, has to leave early, or made other plans. He is very defensive, and takes criticism very hard. He also has an excuse for everything - he is worse than a student. I don't recommend him if you haven't had physics in HS. He'll make you hate physics. I do (now).

When I was a freshman, I thought he was cool, but I had him for an introductory class. Then came Physics 1, which was frustrating, but when it was time for Physics 3 he made me cry and I seriously wanted to quit. The material is challenging enough, and he just adds more stress by assigning homework through web assign, where you're either right or completely wrong (no credit is given even if you have the right approach), and the exams are impossible. He's a nice guy and was cool 4 years ago, but now he's kind of a jerk for a teacher and makes you feel stupid by talking down to you. Don't think he should be department chair.
