Department:
Philosophy
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
Marty! I think he is insane! I did not enjoy his intro to philosophy class at all. He made every student read every class period, and from the reading he would either BS notes on the board or copy from an elaborate set he wrote 500 years ago that no one understood. I can't say I learned much in this class. The exams where easy and if you get on his good side, its prolly an easy A but its really not worth it. He takes attendence and reading skills into consideration when he picks his favorites and if you have any background in philosophy and can challenge or agree with him then your golden. id pass, but he is kinda funny
He does not really teach much, and at the end of the semester he just gives you a grade. It is like he picks grades from a hat.
Positive:
Negative:
Is a bad professor
Expectations are unclear or lofty
Worst professors I've ever had!
Marty is a joke...Only two exams all year and they are essays. You don't learn a thing he just randomly chooses people to read, then tries to show off how he can read latin. So if you can understand latin this may be an alright course for you. Exams are overly difficult considering you don't learn a thing, if your on his good side you'll get an A, luckily i was. However i had a friend that got on his bad side somehow and received a C...we both participated similar and basically had the exact same essays.

Is challenging
Is creative
Brings discussion into the classroom
Negative:
Is a bad professor
Confusing or hard to understand

Not much discussion, all notes. He pretty much wings the lectures (no powerpoints or set outlines), which makes them a bit more interesting. I think he might be insane.

Negative:
Notes/lecture is confusing

Marty is the man. The class breaks down like this: you get two exams and an attendance grade. You really have to show up to each class but he allows you to make up the points with ex credit papers (and for low grades on exams.) You get all the possible questions on the two exams about two weeks before the test and he now allows open notes only on the essays. The exams are a matching section of key terms, and two-three essay questions. The essays are hand crampers so hope you have a girlfriend to take care of certain needs. I couldn't pick anything up for two days after. Don't worry though, he's a self-admitted easy grader (although he never gave me better than a B everyone else got As) Most classes are group readings, so if you're uncomfortable reading aloud don't take him. Other than that the guy is hilarious, especially when ranting about the Bush admin. He does tend to skip wildly through the readings so bring your A game to class. It can be hard getting attention to ask a question or make a point so it better be a good one. Love the Jack Kerouak fashion sense, and his yellow coffee cup (we miss the winking one.) Took him for Philosophy and he seemed more comfortable with that than Gened but this is a required class so might as well take it with a good prof. You have to respect a guy who'd give up his job for his opinion. BTW: don't ask about Auburn U, it's a touchy subject!
