I have had her for Sociology of Gender as well as Women and Crime. If you have an open mind Soc of Gender will most certainly be one of the best classes you will take at UW-Whitewater. There are a lot of articles, but they are interesting. I hardly saw it as homework! The tests are ridiculously easy as long as you highlight the article passages she points out during class. As with Women and Crime. I was sick for a month and I came back and took the last two exams within one week and get and A on one and a B on the other. Do your reading and there is no reason you shouldnt be able to get and A or B. She is also a very flexible and understanading woman. If you are polite and straightforward she will help you with whatever you need. Finally, I find her spacey eccentric nature kind of charming....Go Patty!
sure she knows her shit, but could she be anymore confusing? She does not abide by her syllabus, let alone plans she makes with the class. I'm surprised I even knew when the exams were. She is closed minded, ignores so many students, and spends 1/2 the class trying to hand out articles and still doesn't get it right. She is terrible, it's time for her to retire and go home to her 7 cats (which shes admitted to having... no wonder she's insane)
Positive:
Brings discussion into the classroom
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Negative:
Is a bad professor
Professor is boring or bland
Confusing or hard to understand
Overly difficult tests or assignments
Notes/lecture is confusing
Poor sense of humor
Professor does not relate to students
omg, where to start. Searles is the most scatter-brained professor I've every had. It probably didn't help that I had two equally scatter-brained annoyingly talkative students in my class either. However, she is so INCREDIBLY unorganized and you never know what to expect from her or her exams. She throws hundreds of articles at you, and then one week expects you to read them for the exam, the next week eliminates them from the exam... It is so confusing I often wanted to stand up, throw my books at her and scream! (And I know some classmates fell the exact same way) The class itself contains interesting subject matter, but my God! Searles is crazy. CRAZY.
Positive:

Negative:
Would not recommend this professor
Professor is boring or bland
Notes/lecture is confusing
Poor sense of humor
Worst professors I've ever had!
This is a pretty good class to take. If you read the articles handed out and pay attention to the movies she shows in class, its pretty easy to get a good grade in her class. She's very nice and obviously is very passionate about the material she discusses. The class is pretty interesting for the most part, although sometimes it felt like she spent too long on the same subject.
Positive:
Good professor.
Is interesting/entertaining/funny
Is creative
Brings discussion into the classroom
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Negative:
Professor Searles is a very close minded professor. She pushes her ideas and beliefs onto the classroom and does not leave any room open for opposing beliefs. She makes comments about the Bible when she doesn't even know what the heck she is talking about...she obviously has not read the Bible. If you are very liberal you will probably love her class. But if you are like me and have a more conservative set of beliefs, DO NOT TAKE HER, you will be completely miserable through the whole semester. Peace.
