Richard Cummings
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
Department:
Accounting
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
The exams are not representative of course material. If you have the misfortune of taking the class over the summer, prepare to be overwhelmed. The class is counterproductive insofar as Cummings doesn't prepare lectures but requires attendance. In fact, it is a sad and unfortunate representation of precisely what is "wrong" with the contemporary academy: professors download published powerpoint slides from textbook publishers and use these in lieu of a prepared lecture. Professor Cummings obviously cut corners the entire course. It was a cruel introduction to the mediocrity of UW-Whitewater's accounting program. Avoid this class if you can.
He doesn't really teach you, he shows you the answers and expects you to know where they came from. tests aren't terrible, but he doesnt give you a study guide so you really need to understand the material. don't take him unless you are good at teaching yourself out of the book. grading scale is easy which is the only reason i would recommend him
Positive:
Brings discussion into the classroom
Involves students in every lecture
Negative:
Would not recommend this professor
Notes/lecture is confusing
WOW... First day he goes on for about 45 minutes about how we are going to pretend that we are extra terrestrials and that we are part of a knowledge symphony with him as our director and that the only way to light up our dark world is with our glowing alien 'instrument' brains.. and that the only way to get our brains to glow is to all be thinking the same thing. Scary. Is this an accounting class or a speech class on drugs? He constantly wants input from students through presentations so I don't see how you can learn if you are always worried about giving a group speech in which he will make you feel like an idiot if you give an answer he doesn't like...........do NOT take him.

Prof. Cummings is a solid professor...HOWEVER, he doesn't understand that accounting students have a ton of other homework for other classes. He expects students to be able to spend 3 hours on homework a night just for tax. The content seems very difficult at first but as you read more into it and work some problems, things start to make sense. I wouldn't say Cummings is a bad teacher but he is pretty bland. However, Cummings is a smart man and he knows it and expects all his students to put all their effort into this course.
