Roy Weatherwax
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
Department:
Accounting
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
Weatherwax is very different from most professors to say the least. He is very intelligent, but has never been in the "real world" of accounting. He has been teaching this course since he was a graduate student. He is more than willing to help if you go into his office hours, but during class there isn't much time for questions. I spent more time trying to read his writing than listening to him lecture. He is the only advanced teacher! He totally means well, but is very frustrating at times. Also, expect to get about 5-10 emails a week of information there wasn't time for in class.
Seeing that no one rated Prof. Weatherwax in over a year, i will be the first. He teaches a difficult course but it is possible to do well in it. The material is quite fascinating if you never seen it before; so this class definately is an adventure. It will help you see how some companies put together consolidated statments. So next time u r on harley davidson's website and u are looking at the finacial statments, you have a clue where they came from. What joy!:)Probably the most fun of all accounting courses in uw-whitewater. Now for the class itself. First, complete all homework problems as full as possible, especially the worksheet ones because he puts them on the computer screen and adds entries as he goes. (No more chalk, can't imagine how other people dealt with worksheet in chalk )Good idea to correct your work instead of writing it down like hell. That being said, he will let you copy his entries on your solutions after class; so you will have the corect solution anyway. Hand in every homework; it helps to get full 20 points. Second, exams are hard but the second one is probably the hardest from what i have seen. The best way to study is practice all the homework and class problems like 100 times so you have them down good. Make sure you make two copies of homework or bring what you have to class, correct it as he goes over problems and then rewrite your solution or better yet work it as if it was an exam problem-without looking at the solution. He usually gives you untill the next class time to hand in the previous day's homework. His exams are similar to homework; if you know what to do and get the logic and fundamentals of worksheet entries, you should be able to do well. There is an international accounting section of the course but he doesn't test on that material, thankfully. That material is a nightmare with all the exchange rates changing every minute, You will see what I mean. Third, he does give extra credit which is very generous and nice of him and it can help you alot in the end. So do it! Other than homework and exams, prof. weatherwax is a cool guy. I wouldn't call him extremely personable but he is very "approachable" and is willing to help you with any question you may have; has long office hours so fit everyone's schedule. Willing to stay late if you have to copy his solution or ask last minute questions. Gives notes that will be covered on CPA exam so it is nice of him to do that. Sends long e-mails but they are very helpful and clarify class material so print them out and abuse them. On the other hand he is not very personable so don't expect him to call you by name-ever. I guess learning names and getting to know students is not something he is used to doing. He is almost opposite of Prof. Tatman in this area. Tatman is like your best friend on a rotten day of all. Prof. Weatherwax is like a person you see for a period of time and then he is gone and will forget about you. Like someone you worked with on a project for 16 weeks (a semester) and then the next time you see him at a coffee shop (carlson hallway), he won't remember you. Yeah, and his handwriting is a little like reading a foreign language: listen up at full attention because he writes fast but well... not very legible to say the least. You will get used to it but it doesn't get in the way of learning the material that much if at all. So just work hard in the class, do homework and take care of business because that is the only thing this class is about-Getting an A and remembering the stuff later on but nothing much else. So now you have an update. Happy consolidating! Enjoy fine adventures in the world of acquisitions and doing worksheets again but with more entrires than fingers on your hands and feet.

Negative:
Advanced Accounting 461 is without a doubt the most difficult accounting class in the program. With that being said, if Roy wanted to, he could make the class so much more difficult than what it already is. His teaching approach is kind of flawed, as it is tremendously difficult to copy down an entire worksheet of his because it is so hard to read. He also can be kind of sarcastic when people ask questions. However, despite these flaws, Roy is a fairly solid professor. He always responded to e-mails quickly, and for the final exam essentially gave us extra credit just for showing up. He is unavoidable, as he always teaches Advanced. Lots of effort must be put in to studying to do a good job, but that's college, isn't it?
