I had him for my lab portion of class. Kind of acted very rudle to alot of people in my class. Lab was easy, and interesting. He will help you in and out of class with the lab, but again at times was very rude. But be punctual, as if your late no matter how little, you won't get full points.

This professor is one of a kind. This university would not be the same without this man, and it's a shame that so many students don't see the value in his lectures or his class. I have never met a more knowledgeable professor about ecology and the environment. His teaching style is powerpoints, but only of pictures. You have to come to class to get the notes, and believe me, these notes are invaluable. People complain about the vocabulary he tests on, but if you stop to think about it for a second it makes perfect sense. If you are learning about species loss and degredation in class and reading about local species extinction in the assigned reading, and you have no idea what extirpation means, for example, then you really aren't learning anything at all. Come to class on time, take notes while listening to his lectures, and look at all the awesome pictures he gives. If you can do that, and you have the ability to read about 15-20 pages in a textbook for the whole week, then I'd say you are set. For those of us who are field ecology majors, there is no better class to start with than his.

This professor is unbelievable!!! I had him for a summer class and the only thing difficult was the exams!!! I really enjoyed going to his class...it's like watching the discovery channel everyday!! He's a real stickler for time...so be there when class starts! Other than that, he's an excellent professor and has a great sense of humor!

Solheim is a great professor and I would recommend him to anybody and everybody. The only thing you really need to remember when you are in his class is to be on time. Also...take very good and detailed notes. Not just the notes he puts on the board (although those will definately be on the exam). Keep track of all the vocabulary and try to look at the bigger picture of what he is trying to say and not just the specific examples he gives and you should do fine on the tests.

To do well: show up to class on time, take notes (if he is talking, you are writing!), type notes up later, keep track of vocabulary and make note-cards or something similar, read and take notes on the assigned readings (not a lot of these, but some of them are quite interesting), and finally REVIEW all of this material!!! Too many people never look at their notes again, I suggest re-reading all of your previous notes each day that you have the class, so when it is time for an exam you don't have to work so hard. He is also very willing to help during his office hours, and I encourage you to go there BEFORE the first exam...he can't help you after you fail the exam so prevent that. Most of the people in the class failed the first quiz and exam because of the VOCABULARY...and it is super easy to get those points if you make note-cards. Also, for not using D2L he is extremely organized and very knowledgeable in the subject matter. It is important not to be late or he reserves the right to embarrass you in front of the other students....overall a highly interesting class!
