Thomas Gray
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
Department:
Chemistry
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
Having a degree does not mean you can teach... that is the moral of the story when dealing with Dr. Gray. He may know a thing or two about chemistry considering that he must have that degree to teach in it, but he certainly did not demonstrate as such in the class. He simply seemed bored to be there and had no organizational skills whatsoever. Errors on slides were near daily. He often would be quite late giving review materials for exams. There were several exams that had questions thrown out because there was no incorrect answer. If you do ask questions he often fumbles and is unable to answer. This is what makes him a poor teacher on top of what has been said previously. It is not the material that is so difficult but rather the fact that going to class was pretty much a waste of time.
Dr. Gray is an Ok professor. The class itself is not hard at all. The lectures are very boring and are sometimes painful to sit through. Attendance isn't required though. Dr. Gray is very intelligent and is more than willing to help students anytime, he is always in his office. Many of his lecture slides have errors in them. He is the only professor at Whitewater that teaches Chem 104. The class isnt that bad, you just have to make the best of it and ask questions.
Positive:
Is challenging
Is willing to help students anytime
Shows a great knowledge of subject matter
Negative:
Professor is boring or bland
Needs to involve students in class discussions
Professor does not relate to students
Chances are that if you have to take 104 you have to take Gray, so here's a heads up... learn the material from the book on your own. Gray contributes little or nothing to the educational process. Also, if you need help, go to SI or find another chem professor to help you. It's impossible for Gray to answer even the simplest questions. You'll need to help and get help from your fellow students in lab. Gray is a nice guy, but in the wrong profession. People seem to scare the crap out of him, and he has no social or teaching skills. To UW Whitewater: IT TAKES MORE THAN A PHD TO MAKE A GOOD EDUCATOR!
Positive:
Negative:
Is a bad professor
Would not recommend this professor
Professor is boring or bland
Confusing or hard to understand
Expectations are unclear or lofty
Notes/lecture is confusing
Needs to involve students in class discussions
Lacks enthusiasm in the classroom
Poor sense of humor
Professor does not relate to students
Worst professors I've ever had!
No this is not an understatement. Dr Gray is the worst professor at this university. He cannot explain anything to you and is hopelessly lost if you dare ask him to elaborate further. We are now in the final weeks of class and he is rushing through two chapters so we can fit in all the exams we are supposed to have. Meanwhile nobody has learned a thing in regard to the material. This guy just sucks hardcore. I have never given a professor all F's before but anything more gentle would be an outright lie.

He complains he can't hear you when you ask questions because of the air vent (that they were supposed to fix) and then when he finally can hear you, he doesn't completely answer your question and tells you to read the book. He's not a fair grader and doesn't give partial credit...it's either all or nothing (even if you work the problem all the way through- *ahem* 2.97). He'll end up curving your exam because he'll give you a multiple choice question and not give the right answer as an option. Basically, the average class with Dr. Gray will consist of him being "on the verge of being too loud" because of his stupid microphone, he will have numerous typographic errors and an example of his answer to a question of "what is a microstate" would be, "yes, a microstate". This man is quite special
