Foreign Language
Professors: Respond to evaluations by creating an account
Ximena Torres does not teach Spanish very well. She hands you a syllabus and says "read and learn it all, we'll discuss it the day after and take a quiz." So basically you teach yourself. She has a terrible sense of humor, takes offense to things that Americans do not, and can hardly relate to the students.
Torres is a pretty cool professor, but she is a really difficult grader. She is funny in class and tells some crazy stories so she's laid back. I think she doesn't really know how to approach teaching the material. Personally she should just keep talking in spanish because in english you can barely understand her. I mean you really have to study hard and make sure you understand what's going on or else you'll get a pretty rough grade.
Positive:
Is interesting/entertaining/funny
Involves students in every lecture
Has enthusiasm in the classroom
Comes to class organized
Negative:
Confusing or hard to understand
Overly difficult tests or assignments
Makes class too challenging
I love spanish-but feel as though she has taken this love for spanish away. She grades overally difficult on her tests and then blames the students. Our class average for our first test was about 70% with two people scoring between an 85-90%. Obviously there is a problem if everyone else did below 80%. She then proceeded to tell us that if we didnt have passion we should not take Spanish and shouldn't take Spanish just so we can have it as a minor. After taking Spanish for six semesters and only two semesters left, I honestly feel as though I might give up after the horrible teaching that I am recieving this semester. She doesnt actually teach either and then tries to give quizzes to give extra points back from the homework. First off, you are the only teacher that doesnt give full credit for attempting the homework, and second, why dont you actually spend a day or so talking about the material before we are supposed to just figure out the assignment for ourselves. Obviously foreign language is difficult and needs some guidance. By the way, we have a pointless project assignment that she offered no real instructions on. Terrific. I'd advise you take Chehade, Pilar, or De Gregoria before EVER taking her! I have had A's in all Spanish classes and will probably get a terrible grade and possibly drop the minor after spending three years studying this before of her stupidity! Thanks Ximena!
